Two Gentlemen, a Well-Coiffed Horse, and Some Dead Fish: 18 Photos of Iceland

Revised painting title: Bruce Willis hiding behind a table at dawn.

DSC_0111

I like this one too much for punnery.

DSC_0159

LSD was a bad choice.

DSC_0098

Looks nice, but behind the lens, a man’s testicles returned from whence they came due to the cold. And by man, I mean me (still a man, if you were wondering).

DSC_0072

In Iceland, leprechauns are elves. And instead of pots of gold at the end of the rainbow, there’s bubblegum. The depicted child has just realized she is only rich in gum. Disappointment abounds.

DSC_0038

I like this door. There’s a lot going on here. Maybe this building houses the gold the elves swapped out for bubblegum. Maybe it’s just a cold storage facility, which seem redundant in the arctic. What do you think is in there? Any guesses?

DSC_0047

These are cardboard cutouts. And the ship in the background is named after Mount Esja

My favorite room in the Reykjavík Museum of Art (Harbor House). There were speakers set up on the opposite wall, and a robotic woman’s voice was counting down sequentially in 1/10th integers. This room made me feel like I should sell all my belongings, and join some sci-fi cult (Not yours, Tom Cruise).

DSC_0180

The most northern Mexican restaurant in the world (speculation).

Oh, hey. I saw Kraftwerk in Iceland at Harpa. Remember the post I wrote where I had a full coronary about NOT getting tickets to Kraftwerk? No? You should read THIS –  Understand my eastern european temper a bit more…

It was difficult capturing the vastness of Gullfoss above. If you look to the left you can see tiny black dots on a trail, those are humans. It was so cold, the spray from the falls froze the ledge way off to the right outside the frame. While the composition of the photo isn’t great, this is Iceland to me: Vast, stark beauty with flirty views to the raw power rumbling beneath.

Thank you to all the kind, awesome, beautiful people we met during Iceland Airwaves, and the entire trip. When I arrived back home, I realized this was one of the first trips I’ve taken in a long time where it instantly became essential for me to go back.

See you soon, Iceland!

The caption “Rolling Stones Promo Pic” is a work of staggering genius. It’s so good that I’m actually kind of pissed that someone other than me came up with it.

The Gullfoss is so spectacular that it (and the pony mullet, obviously) has convinced me to put Iceland on my travel short list.

Sweet! We can now hop a direct flight from DC and be in Reykjavik in 6 hours, so we were even considering going for a long weekend (leaving Thursday night, flying back Monday afternoon). Do you think that would be long enough, or is there just so much to see that we need a full week?

        1. mabukach says:

I think that’s enough time to do Reykjavik and the Golden Circle (Thingvellir, Gullfoss, Geysir).
Reykjavik isn’t a very big town – could probably explore the whole city in 2 days. Then do one full day touring the more natural settings.
Time spent really depends on how much of the island you want to explore. If you want to do the Ring Road – definitely a week.

I did. I ate puffin and it was yummy. Most guilty meal I’ve ever had. Eater’s regret.

      1. I was there in the early 90’s and I too had eaters regret. On a side note, if I may make a travel suggestion, The Azores have to be one of the most beautiful places I have ever been, and I have been to a lot of places. defiantly in my top ten.

              1. Benidorm Spain, for a great party and are two right of the top of my head, Spain is kind of like the hidden jewel of Europe. I have been to a lot of places in Spain, I fell in love with the culture and the beauty of the place. Rhodes Greece was another place that was fascinating. they still have catapult stones laying all over the place and the statures and art were something to behold. Give me a bit to think on it and I will give you my top 10.

                  1. I have been to many places in Spain,Alicante, Valencia, and Benidorm are three of my favorite places. Benidorm is more of a vacation/resort town, but the street performers and the endless pubs and bars make this a very fun place. If you are looking for culture, Alicante is incredible, the castle there and the history behind it is simply amazing. Valencia is not to far from Alicante, and is a beautiful place to see. If I remember, the three places I mentioned are all within a couple of hours drive from each other. so if you have the time you can do all three. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
