Went on a ‘scouting trip’ to Chicago; a trip where there’s really no time to explore, or get a feel for the city – at the mercy of time restraints and responsibilities – but, I took some notes for next time, and wanted to share some pics. Hope you like!
Me, wearing an eyepatch, getting drunk on a yacht.
Boat Bartender: “What would you like to drink, Sir?”
Me, pirate voice: “A beer.”
“Bartender: “What kind?”
Me: “P.B.AAARRRRR!”
Thank you. I’ll be here all week. Try the veal, and tip your waiters.

“House Keeping fluff your pillow…”
Next week I’m heading to Philadelphia to see David Byrne and St. Vincent in concert at the Tower Theater (as most of you know, I have a substantial man-crush on DB).
If anyone has suggestions on where I should go in Philly – restaurants/museums – please, leave a comment, or visit the Roam About Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/RoamAboutMike. I post little side-trips on the Facebook page, and some ‘behind the scene’ stuff as well – contemplating a ‘Pick Mike’s Next Adventure’ type of thing sometime soon – will use this as a trial run.
Also, there’s almost a 1,000 of you. Like, this week there will be a 1,000 Roam About followers. Whoa.
Give-away time again!?!
What do you want, dearest readers? ‘Congo’ on VHS? Who wants to suggest some inspirado! Who? Who?
Great, MIke. Makes me want to visit Chicago — it’s been awhile. Congrats on the 1,000 followers and safe travels!

Thanks, Brigitte! Got back to my photographic roots a bit. I’ve been to Chicago like three or four times, but still don’t feel like I’ve experienced it. Same with Philly, and Boston. Time to change that – Philly post soon!

Funny Stuff! I really like your jokes and I want to party like its 9900…also…please PLEASE give away a Plush Amy the Gorilla doll from Congo…and can you please make it have a pull string with some classic sayings from the movie…Like…”Amy…love….Peter…trust…Peter” but also put in some of your own…maybe your style of humor…so sick and demented and beyond typical rating systems…I’d make some suggestions…but I would never try to influence the brilliant! Keep up the amazing work…we should have a party when you reach 1000 likes!

Oh man, does the plush Amy exist?
Actually, I just googled it, and it does exist….on Ebay! Eeee!
All i have to do is record some of our favorite sayings from the movie into a digital recorder, and sew that baby into her back…done!
Let’s party tonight!

I commend you for not putting up any pictures of “the bean” or the spitting fountains found in Millennium Park. I too like the image of the upside down cop car on Lower Wacker Dr.; it reminds me of driving home every day that they were filming The Dark Knight.

found? um, “fountain.” Brain to hand typing fail.

The Bean reminds me of Duchamps’ urinal for some reason. Can’t explain this matching, but I didn’t snap it.
Funny you say that, all those cars were from the Dark Knight. Same street/alley and everything. It was pretty awesome – couldn’t stop saying ‘I’m Batman’ after a few beers.

Love the pics. Chicago is one of my favorite cities, yet I always seem to leave with NO good photos. Hmmm… wonder what that’s about.

Thanks, Tisha! Your Sicily pics are amazingness.
Interesting….lens cap? Just kidding.
Composition or lighting?

Possibly the lens cap?! Probably lighting… and definitely composition!
Also, I get more distracted (and drunk?) in Chicago so forget about my camera altogether. Lame, I know.

Loved my one day in Chicago. The city reminds me a lot of Toronto (hometown)We stayed with my inlaws last Thanksgiving in the burbs and only got to the city for one day. A whirlwind touristy afternoon at the bean etc and then a foggy night of pub crawling in Boystown.Looking forward to going back but not in November again and definitely not in the burbs. Then there is all the restaurants! Better start saving now. Maybe I’ll bike there. Hmmm……

I’ve been meaning to hit up Toronto, or Montreal, or both.
Still haven’t got a feel for Chicago – gonna have to do it up for longer than two days. I didn’t even get to see the bean, which for some reason, looks like Duchamps urinal to me. Don’t know why…
I don’t think they stop you at the border if you bike to America…go for it!

Oh, bringing back Chicago memories! Next time, plan your trip around Gay Pride Parade in the summer… it is truly like no other. Nice scouting trip, and congrats on the millions of followers! Man, you’re good. Last time you wrote about it I think you said a few hundred…. whosh.

I will indeed – although – Columbus’ Pride parade is insanely fun. Good times all around. Did you live in Chicago?
Hahaha one. million. followers…it’s been fun. The folks at WordPress hooked me up, not sure why, but they seem to like me.

Yeah, I lived there for 3 yrs in the early 90s when I was in art school. GREAT city. But ultimately, the 9 months of cold got to me, and the call of NM was too strong. It’s still one of my favorite places to go in the summer.

I hear that – as I scrape off my car everyday for 4 months a year. Ugh. Maybe I’ll defect west as well

Chicago is such a great city. I’ve only been there a couple of times and definitely need a few more visits to really get it. The architecture is awesome in the true sense of the word. What the hell with the police car?

I felt like such a goof looking up the entire time at the architecture – simply amazing.
Haha yeah, the cop car was one of fifty or so they used in Batman – The Dark Knight. They have them just chilling underneath one of the main veins

The first time I went to Chicago, my aunt who lived there for decades told me to take an architecture tour and I was like, “oh yeah, I’ll get right on that.” I’m an idiot because it is fascinating.

Hey, Li-Mei! It’s kind of cold right now, but a river cruise is really interesting, if you’re into history and architecture.
Any of the museums are top notch – but if you’re looking for more fun eating/drinking, check out Lincoln Park or Wicker Park neighborhoods. Tons of stuff to do.
I’ll be there next week for a concert! Will let you know if I find anything cool.

Awesome! I’m actually staying at hostel in Wicker Park because I heard the neighborhood is really hip. Yes, please let me know if you find anything interesting. Have fun! 🙂
