Mike’s Next Adventure

Photo Comicaze: Adverts from Japan

Big is big in Japan

Tommy Lee Boss

Lost in Translation: The Photographer wanted an ‘Acapella’ group for the shoot – they sent ‘A Coppola’.

They really wanted the rugged guy from ‘Titanic’ – but Billy Zane was already booked.

Mr. Beam

Roam About Mike was butt-sore when he found out Condomania didn’t have any Condos for sale.

So he bought a traditional Japanese house with his best friend (and his wife).

Colonel means ‘Dragon Radar’ in Japanese.

The Father and Son Raccoon dog duo were greatly contented when human hands got caught in the door pocket.

Funky Monkey Babys'[sic] new album was panned by critics, but spun by the band’s management as the “Last Best” album of the year.

First Wirst!

After the lawsuit, penguins and roller-skating robots were once again permitted on the subway together.

Lee submitted his final version of ‘Obama with Dog’. He thought he nailed it. He didn’t.

For one fleeting moment, Mary was so high on Mushrooms, it created an all-consuming black hole in her mouth.

And when she came down, she felt…different.

Very different.

Still laughing while commenting. Man, I wish I had your commentary on Japanese ads with me all the time. Like a “Mike’s walking tour of Tokyo advertising” or something.

    1. mabukach says:

We need to make this happen! I could be your surrogate, like Super Dave, only shorter.

  2. ballerina95 says:

    Entertaining post as usual. 🙂

    1. mabukach says:

      Thank you thank you.
Here’s a commercial with Tommy Lee Jones (for Boss Coffee)

      1. ballerina95 says:

What the … oh my goodness! So funny in its weirdness. Kafkaesque 😀

        1. mabukach says:

          Very, very bizarre and amazing.

  3. The Waiting says:

I love me some Engrish. Where else can penguins and roller skating robots live in such harmony?

    1. mabukach says:

Not positive, but I want to say Finland.

    1. mabukach says:

      Thanks, cindybruchman!

  4. Nathaniel Hahn says:

This is simply hilarious…Love the Funky Monkey Babys…OMG need that album stat! Sharing this on FB NOW!

    1. mabukach says:

Thanks, dude! You might want to listen to Funky Monkey Babys before buying…touted as a “hip-hop” group, but really, straight j-pop aka eye-gouging-pop.
      Thanks for the share.

  5. Laura says:

I think Lee just got the title wrong, “Obama In Drag,” would nail it. Great collection of hilarity, Mike, both the ads and the commentary! And I love that you and your friend were comfortable enough to share your bathhouse pic, looks like something out of Bukach In Wonderland.

    1. mabukach says:

Haha! Yes, Obama in drag would be much better.
      Thanks, Laura.
That was our pre-bathhouse robing – we both took the blue pill, or was it the red pill?

      1. Laura says:

Mike, please tell me you’re too young and virile for the blue pill…..

        1. mabukach says:

          bwahaha, all good over here!

  6. PinotNinja says:

Now I finally understand what that raccoon family is doing in my backyard — they are patiently waiting for me to get my hand stuck in the door so that they can point and laugh. Thanks Tokyo!

    1. mabukach says:

It’s what they do, conniving bastards!
When your hand is stuck in the door, they’ll rob you. It’s what they did to me – true story.

      Thanks, PinotNinja

  7. calahan says:

Funky Monkey Baby is funking terrifying and will no doubt give me funking nightmares. Funk!

    1. mabukach says:

I’m funking sorry, Mike. I had to share the funk with the world.

      1. calahan says:

        Funk the world!

        1. mabukach says:

You take it back! (unless this is an album from Parliament Funkadelic, then keep it)

  8. free penny press says:

Can you go back and steal that Leo one for me? I’ll pay you..of course 🙂

    1. mabukach says:

I would definitely do that for you, Lynne. He looks pretty badass, and scruffy…

  9. Jessica says:

LOL! Condomania? Oh my god. And Funky Monkey Babys? Hilarious!

None of this surprises me, actually.

If you went to Taiwan or when you go to Vietnam, you’ll find a lot fewer “foreign” faces in ads, even celebrities.

    1. mabukach says:

These were just odd – out of place, you know? Like seeing Bruce Willis advertising a bank in Russia. But the Tommy Lee one was so weird – he plays an alien visiting japan to study humans, and everyone around him drinks Boss coffee. That’s the marketing behind it. Wha?

Who else is making bank in the Asian market? Any surprises?

      1. Jessica says:

Not sure, honestly… But check out this ad in Taipei from a couple years ago:

Or the energy-saver ad in this Hong Kong-based ex-pat’s site.

        1. mabukach says:

Well, these are perfect. I like the one with the crockpot head. Not sure what’s it’s advertising, but I’m sold!

  10. Your captions here are priceless, in Yen or in Dollars.

    1. mabukach says:

      Thank you, Madame. I guess I’m bi-exchangeable.

  11. The Hook says:

You gotta love the Japanese, right?

  12. natureo says:

    Quite odd!😂but funny!

    1. mabukach says:

      Thank you very much, natureo!

      1. natureo says:

Don’t forget to visit my blogs.

  13. i love the Monkey balaclavas… brilliant.

    1. mabukach says:

      Thanks, katmphotography!
